LDPE and HDPE are both polyethylene, but they do not behave like interchangeable grades of the same material. The difference between LDPE and HDPE starts with chain structure and shows up later as differences in stiffness, flexibility, shrinkage, temperature response, and part stability.

For an injection-molded part, the material decision should come from the way the part needs to work. At Хинтун, we usually look at geometry, load, chemical exposure, temperature, tolerance, and molding risk together before recommending one over the other.

What Are LDPE and HDPE?

What Are LDPE and HDPE

ПВД has a more heavily branched polymer structure. Those branches keep the chains from packing closely, so the material has lower density and lower crystallinity. In practice, that gives LDPE its softer feel and higher flexibility.

ПНД (HDPE), has fewer branches and a more linear chain structure. The chains pack more tightly, so density and crystallinity are higher. That is why HDPE feels stiffer and holds its shape better under load.

The key takeaway isn’t simply that HDPE is denser. Tighter molecular packing gives it more stiffness and higher tensile strength, while LDPE leaves more freedom for the chains to move.

Why the Structure Difference Matters

Why the Structure Difference Matters

difference between low density and high density polyethylene becomes much clearer once crystallinity is considered.

In LDPE, branching interrupts close packing. That reduces crystallinity and makes the material easier to bend or squeeze. HDPE has more ordered crystalline regions, which improves stiffness and shape retention but also changes the way the material contracts as it cools.

That second point matters in molding. Higher crystallinity can help performance in the finished part, but it also means shrinkage has to be taken seriously when dimensions are important.

Механические и термические характеристики

Calling HDPE “stronger” is not wrong, but it is incomplete.

If the part needs to carry load or resist bending, HDPE is normally the better starting point. If the part is supposed to flex, compress, or deform without feeling too rigid, LDPE can be more suitable.

Many LDPE grades are around Шор Д 45–55, while HDPE is often closer to Шор Д 60–70. In a finished component, that difference is obvious. A thin LDPE wall can flex relatively easily, while an HDPE wall of similar thickness feels much more rigid.

Temperature follows the same pattern. HDPE has a higher melting range and tends to hold shape better as temperature rises. LDPE softens sooner, which is useful in some flexible products but becomes a limitation when dimensional stability is important.

Химическая устойчивость

LDPE HDPE Chemical Resistance

Both HDPE and LDPE handle water and many common acids and alkalis well. That is one reason polyethylene is used so often for containers, caps, fittings, and fluid-contact parts.

The mistake is assuming that “polyethylene is chemical resistant” is enough for final material approval. Solvents, fuels, oils, oxidizing chemicals, concentration, temperature, and contact time can change the result. Mechanical stress can make things worse as well.

For a part that sits under load while exposed to chemicals, we would pay particular attention to environmental stress cracking. The exact resin grade and the real service environment matter more than a broad material-family statement.

Преимущества и ограничения

LDPE HDPE Advantages and Limitations

The easiest way to choose between these materials is to look at what the part cannot afford to do.

LDPE is a better fit when:

  • the part needs to bend or squeeze;
  • softness is useful;
  • repeated deformation is expected;
  • high rigidity is not required.

The downside is lower stiffness and poorer load retention. Thin or unsupported areas can also distort more easily during ejection or later handling.

HDPE is a better fit when:

  • the part must stay rigid;
  • shape retention matters;
  • higher tensile strength is required;
  • the component needs to resist deformation under load.

Its main tradeoff is lower flexibility. It can also be less forgiving when shrinkage and cooling are not balanced well.

Both materials are widely used in injection molding. Polyethylene absorbs very little moisture, so drying is not normally the first concern unless the material has been stored badly or contaminated.

In practice, the grade datasheet matters more than the material name. Two HDPE grades with different melt flow rates can fill and pack very differently, even though both are called HDPE.

Shrinkage is where HDPE often needs more attention. Its higher crystallinity can produce stronger dimensional change during cooling. If the wall thickness varies, cooling is uneven, or packing is poorly balanced, that shrinkage can show up as warpage or dimensional drift.

Именно поэтому усадка пластической ткани при литье под давлением should be reviewed together with gate position, packing, and cooling rather than handled as one fixed compensation value.

Mold Design Differences

Material choice can change the mold strategy.

With HDPE, I would pay close attention to cooling balance, wall consistency, and large flat sections. Uneven cooling on one side of a part can easily turn material shrinkage into деформация в деталях, полученных методом литья под давлением.

With LDPE, the concern shifts more toward deformation during ejection and handling. Soft walls, long unsupported ribs, or aggressive ejector loading can distort the part even when the cavity itself is correct.

Во время DFM для литья под давлением, wall thickness, ribs, draft, gate position, cooling, and ejector layout should be reviewed with the actual PE grade already in mind.

LDPE and HDPE Applications

LDPE and HDPE Applications

Общие high density polyethylene examples include caps, closures, rigid containers, crates, storage bins, fittings, protective covers, and industrial molded parts. These applications make good use of HDPE’s stiffness and durability.

типичный LDPE plastic examples include flexible lids, squeeze parts, soft closures, and components where some controlled deformation is useful. LDPE is also common in film, liners, bags, and flexible packaging, although those applications are usually made by extrusion rather than injection molding.

For projects already considering HDPE, our HDPE injection molding guide goes into more detail on processing and design.

LDPE vs HDPE: Which One Should You Choose?

LDPE vs HDPE: Which One Should You Choose

В этом вопросе нет однозначного победителя. HDPE против LDPE.

If the part needs to flex, squeeze, or recover after deformation, LDPE is often the more logical choice. If it needs to stay rigid, carry load, or keep a stable shape, HDPE is usually the better candidate.

Before locking the material, I would check:

  • рабочая температура;
  • chemical contact;
  • stiffness and flexibility;
  • толщина стен;
  • unsupported features;
  • Требования к допустимым отклонениям;
  • shrinkage and warpage risk;
  • assembly load;
  • melt flow rate.

Вот почему выбор материала для литья под давлением is better done before the mold design is frozen. At HingTung, the material and the part are reviewed together because changing one often changes the other.

LDPE vs HDPE Recycling

HDPE and LDPE are both recyclable thermoplastics. HDPE uses resin code #2, while LDPE is #4.

For injection molding, the bigger issue is what happens when recycled material enters the formulation. PCR or reprocessed PE can shift color, melt flow, shrinkage, and mechanical consistency. If recycled content is part of the production plan, it should be included in the trial stage rather than introduced after the mold has already been validated with virgin resin.

Часто задаваемые вопросы (FAQ)

Can the Same Mold Run Both LDPE and HDPE?

Sometimes, but not without checking the result. Their shrinkage, stiffness, flow, and cooling behavior are different enough to affect dimensions, fit, and ejection. A material switch normally requires a new trial.

Does Masterbatch Affect PE Shrinkage?

It can. Pigment type, carrier resin, filler content, and dosage may change crystallization and shrinkage. For a tight-tolerance part, the final production color should be included during validation.

Is Recycled PE Suitable for Tight-Tolerance Parts?

It can be, but material consistency becomes more important. Variation in melt flow or recycled content may make the molding window narrower, so incoming material control needs to be tighter.

Can HDPE Be Replaced with LDPE to Save Cost?

Not based on price alone. The lower stiffness of LDPE can change fit, assembly force, sealing, deformation, and long-term performance. The part needs to be reviewed and tested before substitution.

Заключение

Реальность LDPE против HDPE decision is about part behavior. LDPE gives you more flexibility and compliance. HDPE gives you more stiffness, strength, and shape retention.
